Leeds United will stay hard to beat, insists Ampadu

Leeds United’s captain Ethan Ampadu has told Premier League rivals not to expect a softer approach this season despite a summer rebuild aimed at adding technical quality. The Whites finished 14th in 2025-26, three games clear of the drop, with physicality at the heart of Daniel Farke’s side. Ampadu insists that edge will remain even as new signings like £34m attacker Tarik Muharemovic join up.

Why Leeds United’s physicality still matters

Ampadu’s warning came as Leeds touched down in the USA on Tuesday for a gruelling pre-season double session ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wrexham. The midfielder, who skipped Wales’ June friendlies to rest up, stressed the Whites must stay relentless in every fixture. “You’ve got to lean on what’s worked,” he told BBC West Yorkshire Sport. “We’ve got to try and outrun teams again, make sure we’re hard to play against and see if we can adapt because you want to try and find ways to win.”

Farke’s side over-achieved last term by finishing 14th with three games left. Their running stats soared during purple patches, a trend Ampadu says must continue. “That’s why we have pre-season,” he added. “But it’s one of the most demanding leagues in the world so the physicality has to be there again.”

How Leeds United plan to blend power and polish

The Whites are adding technical options this summer without dropping their trademark intensity. Muharemovic, signed for £34m, embodies the balance Farke wants: a player who can sharpen the attack while keeping the midfield battles fierce. Ampadu, who spent part of his break with teammate Joe Rodon, stressed the squad’s collective drive over individual tweaks. “Not individual things to improve on,” he said. “As a collective, to improve how I can be as a leader.”

Pre-season starts with a double session today as Leeds chase their first win over Wrexham since 2023. Ampadu’s message is clear: the club’s identity won’t soften, even as the squad evolves. “My performance, helping the team in a better way,” he said. “Just to better myself in general which hopefully will enable everyone to feel freer or make sure we have some better results.”
