Leeds United midfielder Ilia Gruev is making significant progress in his recovery from a knee injury that sidelined him at the end of last season. Gruev suffered a meniscus injury during training just before a match against Bournemouth in April, which forced him to miss the final six games of the season. While his teammates celebrated Premier League safety, Gruev was left to watch from the sidelines, unable to contribute to the team's efforts in crucial matches, including an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley. Gruev has previously faced a similar setback, having missed three months during Leeds' Championship title-winning campaign in 2024/25.
As he prepares for the upcoming pre-season, Gruev has expressed optimism about his recovery. Currently in Sofia, Bulgaria, he is balancing rehabilitation with family time. In an interview with his former club Werder Bremen, he stated, "I'm feeling better and making progress. It's unfortunate that I got injured again, but it's part of the sport. I couldn't help the team in the last few games, but I have to keep pushing and working at it."
Despite the challenges, Gruev has established himself as a valuable player for Leeds United, competing for minutes with club captain Ethan Ampadu. He started 15 matches in the Premier League and made eight appearances off the bench, proving his worth in the squad. His performances have also garnered recognition in his home country, with Gruev recently being named Bulgaria's Player of the Year for 2025.
Reflecting on his achievement, Gruev said, "I'm very pleased that my achievements are being recognized in my home country. It's special to be named Footballer of the Year - number 1 - in your own country. It shows that people appreciate what I do."
Unfortunately, Gruev's injury means he will not be able to represent Bulgaria at the World Cup, as the national team failed to qualify. While he watches his Leeds United teammates, including Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor, compete on the world stage, he remains hopeful for the future. Gruev believes Argentina could win the tournament again, but acknowledges the strength of the French squad as well.
