Ampadu hails Wilson’s ‘very special’ impact as Leeds United bolster attack
Leeds United have added Wales international Harry Wilson to their squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Captain Ethan Ampadu says the 27-year-old’s arrival can bring something “very special” to Elland Road.
Ampadu, who also plays for Wales, told BBC Radio Leeds he believes Wilson knew Leeds was the right move even before their talks. “I don’t think he needed my convincing to join,” Ampadu said. “I think he knew what an amazing club this is, what a great time he can have here.”
How Ampadu helped convince Wilson to join Leeds
The 24-year-old defender said he and Wilson have spoken often on international duty. “I like to think my message or two might’ve aided him in that direction,” he added. “I think whenever I’ve spoken to him in the past the Welsh lads on camp have spoken glowingly about Leeds.”
Wilson completed his switch from Fulham on a permanent deal in July 2026 after a strong final season in west London. Ampadu, who joined Leeds in January 2023, said the new arrival’s quality and attitude stood out. “All the conversations he’s had with the manager and club have gone in the right direction,” he said.

Ampadu highlighted Wilson’s left foot, work ethic and team-first approach. “His quality, his left foot, the way he works for the team, the way he works for himself - I think all Leeds fans are going to appreciate the hard work he does and the goals and assists is very special,” he said.
Wilson’s creativity and set-piece threat add a new dimension to Leeds’ attack. Ampadu pointed to his international performances as proof of what Wilson can deliver. “Everyone saw more of him last year,” Ampadu added, “maybe because he was coming to the end of his contract that gets people talking about you in a different way.”
Ampadu on Leeds’ push for a stronger season
With survival secured in 2025–26, Ampadu stressed the need to keep improving. “You always have to try to adapt,” he said. “You’ve got to lean on what worked and you’ve also got to adapt on what you can improve.”
Leeds face a tough pre-season as they prepare to face some of England’s fittest sides. “It’s one of the most demanding leagues in the world,” Ampadu said. “We know the physicality has got to be there again. We’ve got to try and outrun teams again and make sure we’re hard to play against.”
Ampadu said the squad’s hunger remains undimmed. “Collectively as a team we want to improve no matter which way it is,” he added. “That’s why we have pre-season.”
