Leeds United travel to the south coast this weekend for a Premier League encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion, a fixture that presents a formidable historical challenge. The Yorkshire club have never won at the Amex Stadium in ten attempts, a record they are desperate to change as they sit eighth in the table with four points from two games.
According to a preview by the BBC, Brighton are unbeaten in their last ten home league games against Leeds, winning seven and drawing three. More starkly, the Seagulls have kept eight consecutive clean sheets against Leeds at their home ground. Leeds' last victory at the Amex came in a different division and a different era, with their overall record there reading seven losses and three draws from ten visits.
The statistical weight against Leeds is heavy. They have played more matches without winning at the Amex than at any other stadium in their entire history. In eight goalless games there since the 2013-14 season, a remarkable 34 different Leeds players have taken a shot without finding the net. The club's current away form, however, offers a glimmer of hope. They have won both of their away games in all competitions this season, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the league and 2-0 in the League Cup. That's already just one fewer away victory than they managed in 23 away games last term.
A win this weekend would see Leeds win their first two away games of a top-flight season for the first time since 1973-74. They will have to do it without several key players, however, with Ilia Gruev, Joe Rodon, and Mateo Joseph currently sidelined.
Brighton, positioned tenth with three points, present a unique tactical challenge. They averaged 73.1% possession against Aston Villa on the opening day and 74.1% against Chelsea in their second match. No team on record since the 2003-04 season has had at least 70% possession in each of their first three Premier League games, a record Brighton will aim to set. They are also looking to win both of their opening two home games in a top-flight season for the first time ever.
The Seagulls have benefitted from two own goals already this campaign. The only team to benefit from an own goal in three consecutive games were Everton back in March and April of 2014. German midfielder Pascal Groß could make his 250th Premier League appearance for Brighton, which would place him among an elite group of German players in the competition's history.
For Leeds, striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be central to any hopes of breaking the Amex curse. All 15 of his Premier League goals for Leeds have come from inside the penalty area, a record he shares with former striker Lee Chapman for the most goals by a Leeds player without scoring from outside the box. His work rate is also a major asset; he has applied 104 high-intensity pressures in the opposition half this season, a figure bettered only by Hull City's Oliver McBurnie.
The last player to score on their 250th Premier League appearance was Calvert-Lewin himself, for Leeds against Manchester City last November. Leeds' overall defensive solidity has been a feature early on, conceding just one goal in their two league matches for a +1 goal difference. They remain firmly in the early pack, just two points behind leaders Manchester City in the standings.
Following this tough away trip, Leeds United's attention will quickly turn to a home fixture against Newcastle United on September 14th.
