Fiorentina have made an enquiry for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto. The 22-year-old Italy international could leave Elland Road before the transfer window closes, but only if Leeds sign a replacement attacker.
What this means for Gnonto's future
Gnonto has been a key figure for Leeds since breaking into the first team under Jesse Marsch in 2022-23. The winger started 48 of 96 Championship games across two seasons but made just four Premier League starts last season. His absence from Leeds' opening two matches this season due to injury has further complicated his situation.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke has preferred other options in his starting line-ups, as Beren Cross of The Athletic noted: "There has always been someone else the manager has seemingly preferred in his starting line-ups." With Leeds currently 9th in the Premier League with 3 points from their opening game, Farke may be reluctant to lose Gnonto without strengthening his attacking options.
Leeds' transfer strategy
Leeds are hopeful of securing a loan deal for Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk, which could pave the way for Gnonto's exit. The club would not pursue a second attacker if Gnonto leaves, focusing instead on addressing their lack of natural wing-backs. Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson are the starting wing-backs, with James Justin as the best back-up option.
Gnonto could be used as an emergency wing-back, but Farke would prefer to keep him as a winger if possible. The club's current injury list includes Ilia Gruev and Mateo Joseph, adding to the need for squad depth.
The financial aspect
Gnonto arrived at Leeds for a pittance in 2022, making his potential sale a profitable one for the club. However, with Leeds facing a tight budget, they are unlikely to sanction his departure unless they can secure a suitable replacement.
What's next for Leeds United
Leeds United are set to face Brentford at home on August 30, with the team currently 3 points behind leaders Manchester City. The club's focus will be on securing their attacking options before the transfer window closes, with Gnonto's future hanging in the balance.
