Leeds United are in talks with manager Daniel Farke over a new long-term contract. Managing director Robbie Evans has confirmed the club's desire to secure the German's future beyond his current deal, which expires next summer.
Evans said discussions have been ongoing for the past three months and are progressing well. "As far as the contract discussions themselves, Daniel and his team and I have had really good chats for the past three months and they're all on the same page," he stated. The club's top official added that he is not concerned by the time the process is taking, emphasising the importance of getting the agreement right.
"I don't feel it's taking a long time," Evans said. "It just means we're getting it right and also we have time to get it right and so as long as we're still operating together as a group, and we're doing great on that front, I'm not worried."
Summer business and PSR compliance
The contract news comes after a summer where Leeds were active in the transfer market. The club signed goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City for a fee that could reach £45 million, alongside defenders Tarik Muharemovic and Nico Elvedi, winger Harry Wilson, left-back Melvin Bard and forward Jean-Matteo Bahoya. The major departure was defender Pascal Struijk, who joined Brighton for a reported £20 million on 30 June.
Evans explained that the sale of Struijk was the only one required to ensure compliance with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules before the 30 June deadline. The club had prepared for that possibility throughout the season. With the rules set to be replaced by a squad-cost ratio, Leeds moved early to secure their primary targets in key positions, leaving the hierarchy satisfied with their window.
Current form and context
On the pitch, Farke's side currently sit ninth in the Premier League table with five points from their opening three matches. Their form reads two wins, two draws and one defeat from the last five outings. The most recent game was a 6-3 defeat at Chelsea, where goals came from Tarik Muharemovic, Brenden Aaronson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Before that, they drew 1-1 at Brighton with Jayden Bogle on the scoresheet.
The immediate focus now shifts to the next fixture, a home match against seventh-placed Newcastle United on Monday, 14 September.
