Leeds United are planning talks with striker Lukas Nmecha to assess his long-term future at Elland Road. The 27-year-old has grown frustrated after making just four substitute appearances totalling 64 minutes in the Premier League this season.

Nmecha joined the club on a free transfer in July 2025, signing a two-year deal that runs until June 2027. He contributed seven goals and three assists across 37 appearances last term, but was only handed 10 league starts. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin firmly established as the first-choice central striker and the club's top scorer this season with three goals, opportunities for Nmecha have been scarce.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown highlighted the player's predicament. "Lukas Nmecha is going to be unhappy if he's not starting games, it's as simple as that," Brown said. He added, "It's difficult for him at Leeds, because Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the first choice there and that's not going to change, because he's an important part of the way they play."

The club rejected interest in the forward during the summer window, but he is now unlikely to extend his contract unless his playing situation improves significantly. From January, foreign clubs will be permitted to approach him regarding a pre-contract agreement for a summer move, potentially allowing him to depart for free in 2027.

This leaves Leeds with a decision: sell him in the upcoming January window to secure a transfer fee, estimated to be in the region of £8-9 million, or risk losing him for nothing next year. The club's current league position adds another layer to the situation; they sit fifth in the Premier League with nine points from five games, a solid start built on a tight defence that has conceded only three goals.

Nmecha's situation will be a key topic internally ahead of a challenging next fixture away to second-placed Arsenal on 10 October. The outcome of the planned discussions will shape the club's striker options for the remainder of the season and beyond.
