Middlesbrough sign former Leeds full-back Sam Byram

Middlesbrough have signed 32-year-old full-back Sam Byram after his contract with Leeds United expired in June. The former Leeds and West Ham defender, who has over 220 appearances for the club and 61 Premier League games, will join Kim Hellberg’s side as the club looks to secure promotion back to the top flight.

Middlesbrough confirmed the signing of 32-year-old full-back Sam Byram on 21 July 2024, following the expiry of his contract with Premier League club Leeds United in June. Byram, who has played over 220 games for Leeds in two spells, will add depth to Kim Hellberg’s squad as the club prepares for a promotion push.

Byram’s career and Leeds legacy

During his time at Elland Road, Byram made 61 Premier League appearances and was part of the squad that won the Championship title in 2023, earning promotion to the top flight. He has also represented Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Norwich City, gaining experience across England’s top divisions. Despite only two substitute appearances in the league last season, Byram’s future at Leeds was uncertain and he left the club when his contract ended.

Joining a familiar club

Speaking to the club’s website, Byram said: “It’s a club I know well from playing against them over many seasons, so I’m very familiar with the place and delighted to be here. It’s a great club and a big club, and one that I’m really happy to be part of. I’ve been around this league for a number of years and had a couple of promotions in that time, so I know what it takes. It’s an incredibly tough league and a long season, but it’s a great squad and great group. If I can add a bit of experience and a bit of quality, that’s what I’m here to do.”

Hellberg’s promotion ambitions

Middlesbrough missed out on promotion last season after a play-off defeat to Hull City. With Byram’s arrival, Hellberg now has another option in defence as the club aims to secure a place in the Premier League. Byram’s experience in promotion campaigns is seen as an asset for the team’s campaign.

The signing was completed at the Riverside Stadium, and Byram is expected to bring his defensive solidity and veteran presence to a squad that has already made a strong push for promotion.
