Chelsea's decision to prevent Mudryk from moving to a domestic rival was a significant factor. The player had joined the Blues for £62m from Shakhtar Donetsk and, after serving a suspension for alleged doping offences before being cleared, was seeking a fresh start. Journalist Nazar Kinsella told TEAMtalk, "He was super excited about joining Leeds. It was a great platform for him." Leeds' efforts were ultimately undone by Tottenham's intervention in the final day of the transfer window. Spurs presented a deal with a £75m buy option, a figure Leeds were unable to match. Kinsella added, "Leeds were doing everything within reason without going overboard to try and get this deal done." This left the Elland Road hierarchy to finalise alternative business, including the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jean-Matteo Bahoya and French left-back Melvin Bard, while willy Gnonto departed for Fiorentina.
