Leeds United have rejected a transfer enquiry from Sunderland for forward Noah Okafor. The Premier League rivals made a shock approach for the Switzerland international on deadline day, which was met with a swift rejection from Elland Road.
Okafor, 26, joined Leeds from AC Milan last year and impressed in his maiden Premier League campaign. He made 36 appearances, scoring eight goals. Two of those strikes came in a memorable win over Manchester United. Daniel Farke's side, currently eighth in the Premier League with four points from two games, had no intention of weakening their attack. They hope to add to their squad, not subtract from it, as they sit just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
Noah Okafor established himself as a valuable contributor last season. His eight goals and overall performances made him a key part of the attacking unit. With the team aiming to build on a solid start that has seen them score two goals and concede just one, losing a player of his calibre was not an option. The club's stance was clear: they wanted to reinforce their options, not create a new hole to fill. His proven ability to perform in big matches shows his importance to the project.
While fending off interest in Okafor, Leeds were active in reshaping their own squad. They loaned winger Wilfried Gnonto to Fiorentina. To replace him, the club reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for a loan deal containing an obligatory buy clause for young forward Jean-Mattéo Bahoya. Defensively, they were close to finalising a loan for Nice left-back Melvin Bard. Bard was intended to provide competition for Gabriel Gudmundsson, who has only recently recovered from an injury. Until then, right-back James Justin had been covering the position.
Youngster Sam Chambers also secured a move away, joining Northampton Town on a temporary basis to build senior experience.
Retaining Okafor maintains attacking depth for a busy period. Leeds' next challenge is an away trip to face Brighton on September 5th. Brighton currently sit ninth, one place below Leeds in the standings. The early season form shows a team with a solid defensive foundation and room to grow offensively. Keeping a goal threat like Okafor is a significant boost as they prepare for this fixture and the long campaign ahead. The club's decisive action in the market, both in bringing players in and shutting down exits, signals a clear intent to compete.
The focus now shifts entirely to the pitch. Leeds United's next match is against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on September 5th.
